Something putrid. A rotten smell of death and dying&#8230;no pun intended. Not having the best of nasal capabilities I resolved to glide my nostrils within an inch of every surface around. After a few minutes it became quite apparent &#8211; my nose locked in on the bottle of &#8220;2 Buck Chuck&#8221; a Charles Shaw variety of Cabernet I had opened a week ago and <a title=\"Natural Leather Dye Experiment Part 1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mrlentz.com\/2013\/05\/natural-leather-dye-experiment-part-1\/\">stuffed with steel wool.<\/a> I popped the cork back off and took a whiff.<\/p>\n<p>I died&#8230; for a second.<\/p>\n<p>Then neural function resumed and instinct told me to re-cork immediately. The bubbling had gone wild, something&#8230;yes something was happening in that <a title=\"Derogatory British term for inexspensive wine\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plonk_%28wine%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plonk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1726\" alt=\"Natural Dye Wine With Steel Wool\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mrlentz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/NaturalDye2_0030.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I cut a hole in the cork so the bottle wouldn&#8217;t explode under the building flatulent pressure, then as any man would do&#8230; I put it back on the shelf to marinate for another week or so.<\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;m glad I did&#8230;here are the results:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1727\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1727\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1727 \" alt=\"Wine and steel wool and leather samples\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mrlentz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/NaturalDye2_0025.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1727\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wine mixture with steel wool on the right ready to be applied. Non-dyed leather in the center.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Wine<\/h2>\n<p>Eventually, after another week, the wine mixture decided to spare my sinuses and returned to a light vinegary smell. When applied to the leather, then topped with a coat of Extra Virgin Olive Oil, it produced an aged dark brown with reddish undertones. Strikingly perfect and exactly what I was hoping for.<\/p>\n<h2>Blackberry<\/h2>\n<p>The next dye to test out was the blackberry and alcohol mixture. Unfortunately there were no noticeable results.
